I have been playing for 48 years and teaching for 38 years. I teach all forms of 3 finger styles as well as old time. I played for several years before I heard of Earl Scruggs. I also teach thumb style rhythm guitar as well as Scruggs style guitar. I have worked the pro circuit, most recently with The Flint River Boys.

I can get you started with basic banjo chords and fingerpicking, clawhammer or bluegrass-style banjo. For the new player, I emphasize fundamentals like using a metronome, avoiding hand and arm pain, and instrument care and set up, and when you're ready, jam etiquette.I'm teaching out of the Fifth String music store in Berkeley, and at my house in Richmond Annex, near Down Home Music.

I have led Phila.'s premier bluegrass group The Lewis Brothers for about 15 years. I've done shows with Alison Krauss, Doc Watson,John Hartford and many others. I've played at venues like this year's Phila Folk Fest, The Keswick and Sellersville Theatres and many clubs. Many of the people I've taught have gone on to form their own bands and perform around the area. It's a friendly enviornment and reasonable rates. Absolute beginners welcomed.
